How to Clean Your Piano Safely

Regular piano cleaning is important to keep up the appearance and value of your piano, allowing it to function at its best performance level.

Certain products need to be avoided to guarantee protection of your instrument, so try not to use the following:

The Piano Keys:

When cleaning the piano keys, be sure to do the following:

The Piano Cabinet

When cleaning this part of the piano, make sure to dust regularly to prevent build up of dust, as well as using piano-approved polish only when necessary, with a microfibre cloth.

Important: It's best to leave the cleaning of the inside of the piano to the technicians, as a single mistake can damage the piano's delicate mechanisms.

The Pedals

Cleaning piano pedals is an important aspect because it helps prevent tarnishing and dirt build up, keeping them looking attractive and functioning smoothly. Regular cleaning also helps preserve the piano's appearance and value over time, so make sure to:

  • Dust pedals regularly.
  • Wipe with a dry cloth.
  • Avoid harsh metal cleaners.
  • Report squeaks or mechanical issues during routine servicing.

How Often Should You Clean?

For most homes, a piano should be lightly dusted once a week and given a more thorough clean once a month, and piano keys can be wiped down as needed, especially if the instrument is played regularly.

If your piano is in a dusty environment, near open windows, or used frequently, you may need to clean it more often. Regular cleaning helps protect the finish, keeps the keys hygienic, and prevents dust from finding its way into the piano's internal mechanisms.

Remember:

Light dusting weekly

Wipe keys as needed.

More thorough cabinet cleaning monthly

Professional maintenance and tuning every 6–12 months.
